Phase II Testing
In some cases, the eligibility of an archaeological site for listing in the NRHP is “unknown” after it has been identified, typically due to the lack of enough data from the site to properly evaluate its eligibility. Phase II archaeological testing, also known as site evaluation, is the next step in determining the eligibility of a site for listing in the NRHP. Phase II testing typically consists of the excavation of additional shovel tests as well as larger excavation units, strategically placed to yield high-resolution spatial and temporal data that provides us a better understanding of the nature of the site and the deposits which comprise it. Phase II testing methods may also include metal detection, remote sensing (e.g., Ground Penetrating Radar, magnetometer), intensive surface collection, detailed site mapping, and other data collection methods. Based on Phase II testing results, a definitive recommendation on whether a site is eligible or ineligible for the NRHP is made.
