Cemetery Services
Cemeteries represent perhaps the most sensitive of human places, where we place our loved ones after death. While some are active and protected, some have been lost to time, neglect, marginalization, and/or development. We are highly experienced in documenting and investigating cemeteries, including searching for lost cemeteries; mapping and boundary delineation; deed and genealogical research; condition and damage assessments; disinterment and relocation; preservation and protection management plans. We routinely find and record unknown cemeteries as part of Phase I surveys, and we also conduct boundary searches for known cemeteries. For grave identification and boundary delineation, depending on the context and project needs, we choose from specific non-intrusive or intrusive techniques, such as visual inspection, remote sensing (e.g., GPR), probing, and backhoe excavation. We feel that each cemetery is unique and each should be treated with a customized approach as well as with respect. We often work with descendants and local communities to understand and incorporate their knowledge into our documentation, and we can develop protection and preservation plans for these special places.
